What did St Michael's do for music before the organ was installed in 1864?.
Until the installation of St. Michael's organ in 1864, music was provided by a band playing in the West Gallery and consisting of clarionette, violincello (pictured), clarinet and accordion. A real feel of the place of the church band can be found in Thomas Hardy's 'Under the Greenwood Trees'."
The inverted stone.
On the north side of the main entrance porch.
John Parker rebuilt the main porch in 1849 using, as far as was possible, stone from the old porch. It was his habit to date everything he did. This recycled stone bears, at the very top of the picture, the date 1717. Parker likely inverted the stone to avoid confusion by making clear that the porch was his rebuild and not some earlier version.
